Art and Customization

Sun Feb 14, 2010, 9:42 AM

This is just a small thing, a pet peeve but I thought I'd rant about it a little in my Journal and see if others were noticing this. Lately I've been seeing a lot of beautiful images released as "icons" in the Customization section here on deviantART.  The ones I am referring to are just images, like screen shots of icons.  They are not icons, they are digital art.  In many cases, like the wonderful Customer Review Icon kamikaze00x.deviantart.com/art… they are exceptional art work beautifully rendered and exquisitely detailed.  But why are they released in the Customization section? How do you "customize" your computer with these?  Are we to close our eyes and imagine how good they would look on our dock if they were actual, usable icons?  I understand that the artists want to release their art here and have people see it and recognize it as quality work, and that's fine, but these feel like they are being released to the wrong sections.  I mean, a screen shot of an icon is not an icon for customization!  It's a picture, it's digital art.  It's not something you can customize with though.  It's like releasing a screen shot in the Customization section.  It just happens to be a picture of an icon but that doesn't make it an icon.  It's analogous to seeing a beautiful, sleek, red sports car in the new car showroom window and walking in to test drive it only to find that it's a flimsy cardboard cut-out and there's a salesman there telling you to "imagine what it would be like to drive this baby".  This is especially disturbing because most I see are beautiful making me want to be able to use them all the more.  Spectacular pictures, yes, I love it.  Can I customize my system with it?  No.  It's not something I can use to represent an app on my dock.  To me that's an "icon".  It bugs me for some reason and I'm not sure why.  It's like being teased on the playground maybe.  These "pictures of icons" should go in the Digital Art section and not in Customization.  Or maybe in screen shots.  I just don't see where the customization aspect comes in?  Is it just me?

Well I know you had this journal up for awhile but I would like to add my two cents if I may. =D

I find it odd when I go to the IconPackager category and they're pictures of celebrities which in no way can be used in Stardocks IconPackager. Then I realized people don't know that it's an actual piece of software, they think the category is for a "package of icons"

Absolutely agree with you. Besides, sometimes I make an opinion about the artwork just by the preview, cause it's really impossible to download everything. And it's not nice to found out that the work which you have just "fav"-ed is not an icon at all.

Yeah, that's another big one. I can't bring myself to "fav" any of these screen shots of icons. I know if it was a real, usable icon, it would be epic. But instead it's just a snapshot. You'd think the author, even though they did the work under contract for a client, would want to release the actual icon. I have that in my contracts. That I retain the right to distribute the work elsewhere on different channels.

I agree I hate that, another thing is when they make you go to a website or blog just to get hits and then the download is moved or deleted, that's what deviantART is for you load you stuff on here also.
