Mouse Magic First Impressions

Fri Nov 6, 2009, 5:27 PM

UPDATE #1: I found MouseWizard (shareware/nagware) but it actually works! www.samuco.net/web/node/23&nbs… it you can set a two finger click gesture easily!

Like a fool I accidentally deleted my previous Journal entry on the subject of my first impressions of the new Apple Magic Mouse.  I will post the highlight here as well as a great new way I recently discovered that lets you replicate the Exposé and Dashboard activation features I loved so much with my Mighty Mouse.

I had to run out and upgrade to the new Apple Magic Mouse the day it hit the streets. The sleek new look and premium $70 price promised all sorts of great new utility.  I was happy and I was a little surprised at Apple.  Here are my first impressions.

First and foremost the new Magic Mouse is a quality piece of hardware.  Kudos to Apple for the physical execution.  It is solid, the click action is incredibly positive, and the sensitivity it excellent.  A plus on the build.

A was immediately surprised at the software side too.  But not in a good way.  Once you get the Apple Wireless Mouse Update 1.0 installed and rebooted (nothing works without it so run Update as soon as you hook it up), you fall right back into all of your old ways but the new mouse lets you down.  I had setup Exposé to activate All Windows with on the wheel button and Dashboard with the squeeze.  As it turns out neither of these can be recreated with the new Magic Mouse.  The squeeze just isn't there.  Period.  And although there is a wheel button feature, you cannot attach it to Exposé.  And Apple confirms this.  I don't get that.  They give you the ridiculous "double-swipe" feature (who can double swipe a mouse) but no way to tie into Exposé?  Makes no sense to me.

Have no fear though.  The Apple Blog to the rescue.  Check out this entry that walsk you step-by-step through replicating the Exposé and Dashboard functions using MultiClutch.  Here's how to replicate Mighty Mouse Exposé and Dashboard activation functionality with Apple Magic Mouse and Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 theappleblog.com/2009/11/02/ho…

Yeah, the new mouse is a sexy piece of kit. The MultiClutch thing in the blog link actually works. Their instructions and download links made it easy. I can get All Windows with a right swipe and Dashboard with a left. The hard part is doing a two fingered swipe on a small mouse top. That's tricky.

yea i have mastered the technique for 2 finger swiping now though :)

i have to grip a little tighter with my thumb and little finger on each side of the mouse to keep it still and the rest is easy...i was really struggling to begin with but now its easy

thank you for the good info though

expose is far more useful isnt it

Thanks, I've been working on it too. Swiping with the mid-pads instead of trying the tips helps me do it. It still fails about half the time.
